(University of California - Irvine) UC Irvine's Dr. Bang H. Hoang and colleagues have been presented the 2011 Kappa Delta Ann Doner Vaughan Award for their work advancing the understanding of how bone cancer spreads.

(University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine) Researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania have been awarded another five-year, $3.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to continue the programs of the Penn Center for Musculoskeletal Disorders. Penn is one of five institutions nationally with this Center award and the only one of the three up for renewal in the cycle to be re-funded.

(NYU Langone Medical Center / New York University School of Medicine) Experts from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center will present their latest research and clinical findings on diseases of the muscle, tendon, bone and joint at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Feb. 7-11 in San Francisco, California.

(University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine) Mariusz A. Wasik, M.D., professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and Qian Zhang, M.D., PhD, research assistant professor, both from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and their colleagues, found that a cancer-causing fusion protein works by silencing the tumor suppressor gene IL-2R common gamma-chain (IL-2Rγ). The results, which appeared in a recent Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggest news targets for lymphoma and other types of cancer.

(University of Pennsylvania) Mo Salman, professor of animal population health is the 2010 Penn Vet World Leadership Award winner, given annually to a veterinarian who has dramatically changed the practice of the profession and influenced the lives of others. Also honored are Nikkita Patel and Brittany Gross, recipients of the annual Penn Vet Student Inspiration Awards. Each recipient received $100,000 in unrestricted funds, the largest gifts in veterinary medicine.

(Boston University Medical Center) Michael F. Holick, Ph.D., M.D., a professor at Boston University School of Medicine, is the recipient of the 2010 Van Slyke Award from the American Academy for Clinical Chemistry New York Metro Section. The award acknowledges outstanding contributions to the science of clinical chemistry and laboratory medicine.

(University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine) Arthur H. Rubenstein, MBBCh, Executive Vice President of the University of Pennsylvania for the Health System, and Dean, School of Medicine, will receive the Abraham Flexner Award for Distinguished Service to Medical Education from the Association of American Medical Colleges. The award will be presented on Saturday, Nov. 7, during the association's annual meeting in Boston.

(Boston University Medical Center) Michael F. Holick, PhD, MD, director of the General Clinical Research Unit and professor of medicine, physiology and biophysics at Boston University School of Medicine was selected by the American College of Nutrition Awards Committee as the 2011 recipient of the ACN Communication Media Award.

(American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons) A review article published in the September 2009 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons explains that trauma patients who have several orthopaedic injuries and are considered to be in unstable condition should only have a few hours of surgery when first arriving at the hospital.
