NIH expands network focused on how genes affect drug responses

(NIH/National Institute of General Medical Sciences) NIH plans to spend $161.3 million over the next five years to expand the nationwide Pharmacogenomics Research Network. Since its launch in 2000, the network has studied how genes affect individual responses to medicines for heart disease, asthma, various cancers, nicotine addiction and other conditions. In addition to these areas, the expanded network will focus on rheumatoid arthritis, bipolar disorder and the use of pharmacogenetics in rural and underserved populations.
