(NOAA Headquarters) The NOAA Integrated Ocean Observing System has awarded $750,000 in 2009 competitive grant funding to support ocean observing efforts in the Great Lakes.

(NOAA Headquarters) The NOAA Integrated Ocean Observing System is awarding $1.9 million in 2009 competitive grant funding to support ocean observing efforts in the Pacific Northwest. The NOAA grant award will go to the Applied Physics Laboratory of the University of Washington, where it will be used by several academic, government, and industry partners to support the continued development of the Northwest Association of Networked Ocean Observing Systems and associated management efforts.

(NOAA Headquarters) NOAA scientists plumbed the deep ocean, probed the heights of the stratosphere, and surveyed some of the fiercest storm systems on Earth in meeting 2011's scientific challenges. Their discoveries are paying off in longer storm warning lead times, better understanding of our climate, and new knowledge about environmental disasters.

(NOAA Headquarters) NOAA has awarded $543,336 for two competitive grants to better understand and manage outbreaks of harmful algal blooms that threaten public health and fisheries in Puget Sound.

(NOAA Headquarters) NOAA has awarded $2.5 million to the University of Notre Dame and its partners to predict the next wave of invasive species likely to enter the Great Lakes and to identify cost-effective countermeasures.

(NOAA Headquarters) Predicting harmful algal blooms, or HABs, in the Great Lakes is now a reality as NOAA announces an experimental HAB forecast system in Lake Erie. HABs produce toxins that may pose a significant risk to human and animal health through water recreation and may form scum that are unsightly and odorous to beach visitors, impacting the coastal economy.

(NOAA Headquarters) NOAA's Integrated Ocean Observing System has awarded $2.46 million in competitive grant funding to support ocean observing efforts in the Northeast. Administered by the Northeastern Regional Association of Coastal Ocean Observing Systems, the grants support ocean observing activities from Long Island Sound to the Canadian Maritimes, as well as other projects funded through the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The funds also support a variety of projects to improve ocean and coastal data and support fisheries and ecosystem management.

(NOAA Headquarters) NOAA has awarded $457,000 in competitive grant funding to support three projects to better track and manage outbreaks of toxic red tide algae that threaten public health and New England's shellfish industry. The grant covers the first year of what will be multi-year projects.

(NOAA Headquarters) NOAA will participate in a private research expedition to study marine life living on and around the wreck of the USS Monitor. The Aug. 2-8 expedition is the first in the history of Monitor National Marine Sanctuary devoted specifically to understanding how the wreck contributes to the health of underwater creatures and plants living in sanctuary waters.
