(University of Texas at Austin) The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has awarded the Abel Prize for 2010 to John Tate, professor emeritus of mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin, for his vast and lasting impact on the theory of numbers.

(Springer) The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has awarded the Abel Prize for 2010 to Springer author John Tate of the University of Texas at Austin. The mathematician has been honored "for his vast and lasting impact on the theory of numbers." The prize amount is approximately EUR 730,000 and will be presented to Tate by His Majesty King Harald at an award ceremony in Oslo, Norway, on May 25, 2010.

(University of Copenhagen) Professor Ib Madsen is one of the world's leading researchers within pure mathematics. The Ostrowski Prize, which is for more than DKK 600,000, is awarded every other year by an international jury from the universities in Basel, Jerusalem, Waterloo and the Netherlands for outstanding achievements in pure mathematics. The prize has been awarded since 1989.

(Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) The winners of Germany's most prestigious research prize have been officially announced. At its meeting in Bonn today, the Joint Committee of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) named ten researchers, four women and six men, as the winners of the 2011 Leibniz Prize. The award winners were selected by the Nominations Committee from among 152 nominees, and will each receive € 2.5 million ($3.3 million) in prize money.

(Virginia Tech) John A. Burns will receive the W. T. and Idelia Reid Prize in Mathematics from the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics. The prize recognizes outstanding research in the broadly defined areas of differential equations and control theory. Burns is currently working on computational problems associated with the design and control of high performance energy efficient buildings.

(Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) The W.T. and Idalia Reid Prize in Mathematics will be awarded to Anders Lindquist at the annual meeting of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics in Denver, July 6-10. Lindquist is being recognized for his fundamental contributions to the theory of stochastic systems, signals and control. He is head of the Division of Optimization and Systems Theory and director of the Strategic Center for Industrial and Applied Mathematics both at the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden.

(Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) Professor Irena Lasiecka of the University of Virginia is the 2011 recipient of the W. T. and Idalia Reid Prize, which is awarded annually by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics for outstanding work in, or other contributions to, the broadly defined areas of differential equations and control theory.

(ICM2010) Radha Charan Gupta is the first Indian to be awarded the Kenneth O. May Prize for the History of Mathematics. The award will be conferred upon Prof. Gupta at the International Congress of Mathematicians to be held in Hyderabad, India, Aug. 19-27, 2010. Prof. Kim Plofker, a mathematical historian and the author of "Mathematics in India," will present the award to Prof. Gupta on behalf of the International Commission for the History of Mathematics.

(University of Texas at Austin) Mathematician Luis Caffarelli has been named a winner of Israel's prestigious Wolf Prize. Recipients of the Wolf Prize are selected by an international committee of recognized experts in each field. As of 2011, a total of 253 scientists and artists from 23 countries have been honored. The award has been given most years since 1978 for "achievements in the interest of mankind and friendly relations among peoples ... irrespective of nationality, race, color, religion, sex or political views."
