(Boston University Medical Center) A team of researchers from Boston University's School of Medicine and College of Engineering have been awarded a five-year, $4.8 million National Institutes of Health grant to develop a low-cost, multiplexed virus detection platform. Based on technologies developed with seed funding from Boston University's Photonics Center, the resulting diagnostic platform should be capable of rapidly detecting -- at the point of care -- viral pathogens such as Ebola, Lassa fever and Marburg.

(University of North Carolina School of Medicine) A University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researcher has been awarded a four-year, $507,000 grant from the National Institute of Health's Fogarty International Center to study the effectiveness of rotavirus vaccines in the Central American nation of Nicaragua.

(University of North Carolina School of Medicine) The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has been awarded a five-year, $6.2 million renewal grant to continue its work as part of the National Institutes of Health's Rare Diseases Clinical Research Network.

(Boston University Medical Center) Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine have been awarded a five-year, $2 million grant from the National Cancer Institute Early Detection Research Network, as well as a four-year, $1.3 million grant from the Department of Defense. These grants will allow the scientists to develop novel and complementary procedures for early detection of lung cancer in high-risk patients.

(Boston University Medical Center) A team of researchers at Boston University School of Medicine have been awarded a five-year, $7.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to explore how chronic inflammation can lead to systemic diseases.

(University of North Carolina School of Medicine) The National Cancer Institute has awarded a five-year, $13.6 million grant to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Carolina Center of Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence based at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, for research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of cancer through applying/using advances in nanotechnology. The grant will support the continued work of the center launched in 2005 as part of NCI's Alliance for Nanotechnology in Cancer.

(University of Washington) The University of Washington is leading a five-year, $7.5 million project to study birds, insects and bats in order to develop autonomous aerial vehicles that can adapt to obstacles and fly in unpredictable conditions.

(Boston University Medical Center) The Vasculitis Center at Boston University School of Medicine has received a five-year $6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. The grant will be used to research new biomarkers for vasculitis disease activity and prognosis. The research will also develop and standardize outcome measures for the different types of vasculitis, and develop and standardize imaging techniques for the large vessel vasculitides. In addition, clinical trials of new therapeutic agents will be examined.

(Boston University Medical Center) Boston Medical Center has been awarded a four year, $5.7 million grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute for investigators from Boston University School of Medicine to create the Center for Health Insurance Reform, Cardiovascular Outcomes and Disparities.
