(Institute of Physics) A German-Spanish research group, split between the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching and the Institute of Photonic Sciences, is using the principles of an iconic quantum mechanics thought experiment -- Schrödinger's superpositioned cat -- to test for quantum properties in objects composed of as many as one billion atoms, possibly including the flu virus.

Researchers have proposed a new paradigm that should allow scientists to observe quantum behavior in small mechanical systems. Their ideas offer a new means of addressing one of the most fascinating issues in quantum mechanics: the nature of quantum superposition and entanglement in progressively larger and more complex systems.

In addition, an important aspect of the famous thought experiment known as "Schroedinger's cat" is probed.

Quantum physicists have now achieved controlled entanglement of 14 quantum bits (qubits) and, thus, realized the largest quantum register that has ever been produced. With this experiment the scientists have not only come closer to the realization of a quantum computer but they also show surprising results for the quantum mechanical phenomenon of entanglement.

Physicists have made an important advance in quantum mechanics, demonstrating that they could detect the quantum correlations in the results of measurements of entangled quantum bits, using a superconducting electrical circuit.
